Course Description

SimBa is a Modular Training for Banking Excellence

SimBa (simulation of a bank) takes into account the challenges of times, operates in the current regulatory environment, and is mindful of personal leadership and personal motivation as a basic prerequisite for the ability to lead and encourage other people. Bearning SimBa program participants understand how a bank works, they are able to take business decision to satisfy both their shareholders and regulatory requirements. They are qualified to consider risks/returns and decide about bank operations. They are also capable to interpret the bank results and risk.

Content

The workshop provides the participants with the scope of bank management and bank strategy, as well as the main bank functions in the current environment of digitalization. The participants will understand the main bank ratios, bank performance, bank risk policy, the principles of actual banking regulation, controlling procedures and the transfer price method, the basics of liquidity risk, interest rate risk and credit risk. Participants acquire basic skills for the principles of assets and liabilities management in relation to the business units, the bank’s liquidity management and the key function of Treasury in the bank. They will also learn how to price the bank´s basic products.

  • Bank’s strategy - Business strategy definition of a model bank by considering the major influence factors, relations to the shareholders
  • Economic and regulatory margin conditions influencing the decision-making process in the bank
  • The role of bank’s business units (retail, corporate) and the risk-taking units
  • Balanced Scorecard (BSC) method for bank management, 4 perspectives of the bank management (financial, customer, processes and organizational view)
  • Key bank’s ratios (RoE, RORAC, CIR, EVA) – financial view
  • Bank controlling, balance sheet structure, profit and loss profile, different sources of bank’s profit
  • The regulatory framework Basel III & IV and legal requirements in the context of the European Union, in particular the Capital Requirements Regulation (CRR), Capital Requirements Directive IV - CRD IV, the Single Resolution Mechanism Regulation (SRMR), the Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive (BRRD), the Deposit Guarantee Scheme Directive, and their implementation in legislation. Understanding the principles of bank regulation, Basel regulation concepts, EU regulatory bodies, EU bank regulation (CRR, CRD, SRMR, BRRD, deposit guarantee scheme, liquidity ratios LCR and NSFR, EMIR, IRRBB, ICAAP&ILAAP, SREP, MREL, MiFID II)
  • Introduction to risk policy for different types of customers, Risk management basics (interest rate risk, credit risk, liquidity risk), mark-to-market method, VaR method, Expected Shortfall
  • Introduction to bank’ s balance sheet structure (business and ALM point of view)
  • Introduction to financial markets, the role of Treasury in the bank
  • Pricing strategy for private, corporate and institutional segment
  • Proper decisions on interest rates for particular bank’s products, funds transfer pricing (FTP)
  • Digital transformation, the role of fintech in banking
  • Case studies, exercises and practical examples

Instructor

CEO, Bearning Martin Macko

Martin started his career in banking in 1994 as an MM&FX Treasury trader. Later he was appointed Treasury Director and Chairman of ALCO at a subsidiary of an international banking group. In 2007, Martin founded a consulting company. Later, Bearning expanded its activities to include professional banking education in the areas of ALM & Treasury, financial markets, risk management, fintech and digitalization. Martin holds several degrees and qualifications: Ing. (equivalent to M.Sc.) from the Slovak Technical University, ACI Dipl. (ACI Dipl.) from the Financial Markets Association, Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA)® and Certified Banking & Credit Analyst (CBCA)™ and Capital Markets & Securities Analyst (CMSA)® from the Corporate Finance Institute.
